Since 1965, the Croton Free Library’s building has stood as the heart of our community— a place where generations of neighbors have gathered to explore ideas, access vital resources, and connect with one another. Over six decades of continuous service, the Library has evolved alongside the residents it serves. Now we have reached a turning point that requires a proactive investment in our collective future.
Our current renovation initiative is a strategic response to the physical realities of an aging building. While the Library remains a welcoming space, its core infrastructure is reaching its natural limit. Essential systems, including the roof, doors and windows, have reached a stage where simple, localized maintenance is no longer sustainable or cost-effective. A comprehensive modernization of these foundational elements is necessary to keep the building safe, functional, and energy-efficient.
But this project is about more than essential repairs. It is an opportunity to align our space with the way people use a library today. Library usage has shifted significantly since the mid-century, and our layout needs to reflect that. We are reimagining the interior to create a more intuitive experience: a greatly expanded Children’s Room, a safer and more accessible entryway that improves the flow of traffic for all visitors and dedicated spaces for teens and quiet study rooms. The changes will ensure the Library continues to serve students, remote workers, and families alike.
The planned $8–9 million renovation represents a long-term commitment to the Library’s future and its role in our village. We are pursuing a balanced funding model that pairs private philanthropy with responsible public support. This approach allows us to preserve the unique character of our building while equipping it for the 21st century.
