The Seed Exchange at the Croton Free Library

Calling all gardeners! Our Seed Exchange is located in the card catalog near the Reference Desk, and it's available any time during the Library's regular hours.

Anyone is welcome to take or donate seeds — all for free. Check out the FAQ below for details.

Anyone can take up to five packets of seeds or donate packets they've purchased. You do not need to check them out (although it’s great to get a library card if you don’t have one)!

Bring seeds in their original packages and place them in the jar on top of our repurposed card catalog. We accept open packets, packaged for the most recent growing season. Please make sure seed types & packed-for dates are legible.

Five packets at a time.

Nothing! All seeds are donations from neighbors & local businesses. Many thanks to the generous organizations and local businesses who donated seed packets: the Community Seed Network, Hudson Valley Seed Company, Millwood Garden Center, Upper Village Blooms, and Whispering Pine Garden Center.

Seeds are sorted by flowers, fruits, herbs, and veggies and organized into drawers in our card catalog. Volunteers go through our donations to categorize and file seeds. Any old, unusable, or suspicious-looking seeds will be discarded.

Not at this time. But we happily accept open, partially used packets from commercial vendors.

We have asked that people contribute only non-invasive plants from the most recent growing season. Volunteers have worked to ensure their quality, but no guarantees! Plant at your own risk.

We'd love more volunteers! Email gwen@crotonfreelibrary.org.
